Abstract

Punjabi is one of the largest languages in the subcontinent, which contains a variety of countless languages. Majhi, Pothohari, Saraiki, Hindko, Dogri and other languages not only reflect local dialects, idioms and everyday life but also give Punjabi literature creative breadth, realism and cultural identity. This paper will shed light on the relationship between Punjabi languages and literary expression. First it will be shown how languages preserve folk heritage and cultural roots in literature. Then there will be a discussion on the aspect of realism in that characters seem more real, grounded and impactful when they speak in their vernacular. The third part will emphasize the creative possibilities created in Punjabi literature by the diversity of languages. The purpose of this study is to show that Punjabi languages are not just linguistic differences but the soul of literary expression, which give depth, diversity and cultural identity to literature.
